Bluetick Coonhound Puppies

Purebred Bluetick Coonhounds are an interesting mixture of several breeds. They were first developed in the Southern United States from a French style hound, the ‘Bleu de Gascogne’, the American Foxhound, English Foxhound, Black and Tan Virginia Foxhound and a Cur Dog. From these five dog breeds they adopted their mottled fur colours, giving a blue impression due to the mixture of black and white throughout the body. Purebred Bluetick Coonhounds are large, thick framed animals with very long ears, square muzzles and dark eyes with what seems like tan ‘eyebrows’ over the eyes. The face and ears are mostly black with some tan and white as well.

More ABOUT THE Bluetick Coonhound

Although Bluetick Coonhounds are still bred to be good work dogs, they make excellent pets for Canadians with families. Purebred Bluetick Coonhounds are very loving and gentle creatures and are trusted family members, even around small children. They are quite intelligent and their independence may make them difficult to train, but once trained they are wonderful around the house. They need space to move around or a large yard so that they don’t become restless. Blood hounds can weigh anywhere between fifty five to eighty pounds for males and forty five to sixty five pounds for females. They are very even tempered with humans but may become mischievous around the house if food is left out or if small animals are around. Overall, purebred Bluetick Coonhounds are wonderful work dogs, playmates and members of the family.
